Slip and fall prevention

Use a night light on walking routes

Provide an easy-to-use night light or sensor light beside the bed, in the hallway, and on the route to the bathroom, and test it before sleep.

Why it matters

Walking in darkness hides clutter, thresholds, and floor changes. Older people and anyone with reduced vision face a higher fall risk.

Wrong action

Walking in darkness or leaving the light switch hidden behind clutter or difficult to reach.

Correct action

Give every essential route gentle but sufficient light, with an accessible switch or reliable sensor.

What to do

  1. Identify the night route from the bed to the bathroom and exit.
  2. Install or switch on a non-glare night light or sensor light.
  3. Test the light before sleep and clear clutter from the route.

If something happens

After a night-time fall, switch on the light and remove immediate hazards. Do not rush to lift someone who may be seriously injured; call 999.
