Steps

Step 1
Measure rice
Measure 2 rice-cooker cups of Japanese short-grain rice into a large bowl.

Step 2
Rinse rice
Add clean water and gently swish the grains, then pour away cloudy water. Repeat until the water is clearer.

Step 3
Drain rice
Drain the rinsed rice in a sieve for about 5 minutes.

Step 4
Remove husks
Strip the husks and silk from both corn ears and rinse them.

Step 5
Cut off kernels
Stand each ear securely on a board and cut the kernels down the cob with a knife.

Step 6
Cut cobs short
Cut the stripped cobs into short pieces that fit flat in the rice cooker.

Step 7
Add rice to pot
Tip drained rice into the clean rice-cooker inner pot and level it.

Step 8
Add water and seasoning
Add light soy sauce and salt, then water up to the 2-cup white-rice line. Stir gently.

Step 9
Layer corn
Scatter kernels evenly over the rice and lay cob pieces on top; do not mix kernels into the rice underneath.

Step 10
Soak rice
Let the rice and corn soak in the inner pot for about 30 minutes, then close the lid.

Step 11
Cook and rest
Cook on the standard white-rice setting. Leave covered for 10 minutes after it finishes. Cooking usually takes 35 to 45 minutes, depending on the machine.

Step 12
Add butter and fluff
Open and remove the cobs. Add butter while hot and gently fluff with a rice paddle until melted. Serve in bowls.
Common mistakes
- If you add water before soy sauce and then add soy, the rice may be too wet; add soy first and fill to the mark. Opening the lid without resting may cook unevenly.
Tips
Fresh cobs add sweetness. Use the 2-cup white-rice water line of your own cooker. Butter and wheat in soy sauce may cause allergies.
